크게 부서지는 파도 소리도 들리지 않는대도,

미쳐서 못처럼 죽어

기질의 머리가 망치질하여 데이지를 뚫어도,

해가 고장 날 때까지 해 속에서 부서지리라.

딜런의 시가 대부분 그렇듯이 시의 전체적인 분위기는 어둡다. 어쩌면 어린 시절 겪었던 세계대전에서 겪었던 기억이 시의 세계에 영향을 미친 듯하다. 하지만 이 시는 운명에 맞서 싸우려는 의지가 아주 돋보이며 딜런의 대표적인 시 중의 하나이다. 최근 우리 고장에서 겪었던 지진과 서해 낚싯배 침몰로 우울한 마음을 이 시로써 용기를 얻었으면 좋겠다.
